EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
